Adelaide dark pop and grungy rock band Babes Are Wolves (Anna, Casey, Zoe and Emily and photographed above by Brent Leideritz at <twentyfourb.com>) are all set to issue their debut EP, You Only Live Twice, at a launch that will boast a Prom Night theme along with two guest acts.
“I reckon it’s going to be a really good launch because, yeah, we have the prom night theme happening and are asking everyone to dress up in their best prom outfit,” Babes Are Wolves’ bass player, Casey, announces.
“So they’ll all be able to vote for the Prom Queen and Prom King on the night,” she happily continues. “So we’ve got a bit of a ’90s vibe happening – there will also be some ’90s music between each band – and there will be a photo booth as well where people can have their Yearbook photo taken.
“So that will be something people can take home with them to remember the night,” Casey adds with a laugh. “And then wake up in the morning and look at it and be embarrassed. People will think, ‘God, I don’t remember this’.”
Babes Are Wolves have been playing around the place for a couple of years now.
“We all kind of knew each other – Anna and I went to TAFE together and I knew her from The Villenettes anyway – and she knew another musician [Emily],” Casey says. “And we were all fans of Sean Connery so it kinda started off as a bit of a Sean Connery fan club.
“And I’d been playing with The British Robots with Zoe,” she adds. “And I’ve kind of always played bass. I just kind of picked it up after playing guitar but then had lessons and then got a diploma [in bass playing] from TAFE.
“But I’m actually a piano teacher,” Casey then confides. “And I’m a self-taught recorder player as well.”
The band, whose earlier demo, Down, ended up at the number 23 spot on Three D Radio’s end of year Top 100 + 1 and was included on the community station’s Depthcharge compilation, recorded their EP at Capitalsound Studios.
“That’s run by Jimmy [Balderston], the drummer from Grenadiers, and he did a really awesome job,” Casey enthuses. “And I think we were there for about four or five days. But, playing bass, I reckon I only played it for an hour all up.
“It was a great experience though,” she then adds. “And we were having fun and were all playing around and egging each other on.”
Hey Lady!, a duo from Newcastle, will be heading down to participate in Babes Are Wolves’ upcoming launch.
“We’d played with them in Adelaide when the toured here with Axe Girl, the band from Perth that’s got Ness and Brett in it from Jebediah,” Casey reveals. “And then The Villenettes, which Anna is also in, played with them up in Newcastle.
“So we are pretty stoked they are coming down here for our launch,” she adds, “and the have such an incredibly huge sound for just a two-piece.”
Red Desert Ocean will be making their debut at the launch.
“We found them on Soundcloud and thought they sounded awesome – very Queens Of The Stoneage – so we asked if they wanted to play,” Casey says. “And it turns out it’ll be their first gig.
“We had no idea they’d never done a live gig before,” she concludes with a laugh. ‘But that explained why we had never seen or heard of them before.”
Babes Are Wolves will launch their You Only Live Twice EP at The Jade Monkey, 160 Flinders St, on Friday 16 October with special guests being Newcastle’s Hey Lady! with Adelaide’s Red Desert Ocean making their live debut. Doors will swing open from 9pm and it’s an easy $10 entry.
